The end of the year will mark the end of the Government’s Solar Bonus Scheme, otherwise known as the 60cent or 20cent per kilowatt hour Feed In Tariff (FIT). Now is the time to think about getting your gross meter changed to a net meter or smart meter, here’s why:

What does the end of the Solar Bonus Scheme mean to me?

Currently, your gross meter sends all the electricity your solar panels generate to the grid, for which you receive the Solar Bonus Scheme rebate or feed in tariff of 60 cents or 20 cents per kilowatt hour. If you do nothing, the gross meter will continue to send all of your solar power to the grid, however, depending on the rates provided by your electricity retailer, you will only receive 6 cents per kilowatt hour of solar generated electricity.

What can I do?

To make the most of your solar power investment, it’s wise to use the power generated by your solar panels to supply your energy requirements first, with only the excess being sold to the grid. To do this, you will need to change your gross meter to a net meter or smart meter.

Which type of meter is best for me?

There are two types of meters to choose from:

  • A manually-read time-of-use net meter
  • A smart meter
What is a manually-read time-of-use meter?

A net meter is very similar to your current meter and will continue to be read by an Essential Energy meter reader every 3 months. Net meters must be upgraded by an Essential Energy Authorised Service Provider (ASP) Level 2 Electrician. If you would like to register your home or business for a net meter upgrade, simply call us on 0419 867 530 or email info@lightouchelectrical.com.au and we will let you know the one-off cost and schedule in your upgrade.

What is a smart meter?

A smart meter measures electricity in real time and can be remotely read and operated. Energy use information is available online so you have better access to your consumption data. A fee of approximately 25cents per day or $91.25 per annum will be charged and identified on your bill as a separate metering fee. Contact your local electricity retailer like Enova Energy to book in your smart meter installation.

I’d like a net meter, how do I book?

Call us on 0419 867 530 or email info@lightouchelectrical.com.au and we will provide you with further information about inclusions and can arrange a suitable time for your net meter upgrade.
